Storycatchers Theatre prepares young people to make thoughtful life choices through the process of writing, producing and performing original musical theatre inspired by personal stories. Participants from several Storycatchers Theatre programs performed “Baddest Kids On The Block” at the company’s recent Annual Benefit Brunch & Performance on March 28, 2015. The performance ensemble included current Teens Together participants as well as alumni from the company’s residential programs for incarcerated teens. The song, “Baddest Kids On The Block,” is from the November 2014 production, TEENAGE TEARS, a one-act musical created and performed by girls incarcerated at the Illinois Youth Center-Warrenville. TEENAGE TEARS examined the multi-generational impact that the incarceration of mothers has upon their families. In this song, Layla tries to forget the anger and sorrow she feels over her mother’s prison sentence by attending a party, which nearly leads to tragedy. As with all Storycatchers productions, the events in TEENAGE TEARS are all based upon the true life experiences of program participants.
